Gisborough Hall Wedding - Winter Wonderland

The last month or two has seen a welcome delivery of the white stuff ( snow that is ) which is fantastic for our photos and with the help of very willing clients has seen some great fun moments. Here are a few choice shots from November and December.

On the subject of snow shooting , TOP TIP - whatever your camera you will normally need to overexpose the shot slightly maybe by a stop or so on your exposure dial on your camera for the simple reason the amount of white in the scene will trick the camera into underexposing resulting in a blue-ish shot , to get real nice white overexpose and shoot in raw so you can change the colour cast if you need to.

On the way to the venue ruth was taking some shots out of the car window , always good to do to get that little bit extra ! these are a couple of passers by stuck in the snow waiting for a bus :)

On arrival at Gisborough Hall the snow and ice was too much for us and we just had to take some detailed shots ! , this is the fountain in all its frozen glory.

Once the ceremonies were over ( yes there were two , one indian and one english ceremony ) the happy couple braved the snow to go outside for some shots , and just had to take one of them braving the snow !

Even in these conditions it was well worth it for this sort of shot , a beautiful image they will treasure forever.

In the evening the snow stopped for a while , long enough for a snowball fight to ensue , the brides aim was deadly and she was declared the winner.

At the end of the evening a friend of mine and national fireworks display expert Jitu Desai from G2 fireworks had set up a firework display , some of the guest braved a moment in the sheer snow and freezing rain to catch a glimpse. I however was out in it for around 10 minutes and absolutely drenched. TOP TIP - dont even attempt this without a waterproof camera AND lens , or invest in a camera cover , snow has a nasty habit of finding its way into cameras and lenses. We are lucky in that we have the latest Canon Cameras and L Series Lenses which can take this punishment , I was much worse for wear than the camera was ! but again worth it for these shots . Another TOP TIP - when shooting in rain or snow keep your lens hood on and keep the camera pointed down till the moment you take the shot , this way you wont have spots of water on your lens and wont have to wipe it so often.

Only a couple of days passed and we were back at Gisborough Hall again , and the white stuff had made no attempt at leaving thankfully so more snow fun to be had ..

This is the hall in all its glory and one of the favourite angles its normally taken from , looks wonderful in the snow or in the middle of summer with the bright red ivy covered walls.. TOP TIP , for landscape shots you really need to be using a wide angle lens , the normal kit lenses with cameras can go as wide as 18mm , however for a real wide shot you want to be looking at around 10mm on a crop sensor camera , or 16-17mm or wider on a full frame to give you a landscape feel.

The bride was determined to play in the snow and came well prepared !

We couldnt keep the eager bridesmaids out of the snow either ! all the better for us

And another favourite angle of gisborough hall with the hills in the background, TOP TIP - with snow shots try and consider where you are walking and keep the footprints out of your shot , or as in this case it was impossible so I cloned all the prints back out to make a nice fresh scene.

This time we had 6 participants in our snowball fight ! strangely the girls won again !

and the bride decided the groom still needed to be properly defeated and in no doubt to who was wearing the snow

and that just left the bridesmaids to do some snow jumping ! which we happily obliged with
TOP TIP - when shooting action scenes and you know youre subject is going to be moving fast you need to ensure a fast shutter speed , there is no definitive rule to this but i would normally look at at least 1/400 sec for a shot like this and if possible a little more, in this case i used flash and dropped to 1/160 sec as i wanted to capture a little movement too in the arms and flowers just to add to the look ..

A couple of great days in the snow .... hopefull more snow to come soon , we have a Land Rover so dont care lol
